Neuropsychological Evaluations

Our Approach
If you’ve been noticing shifts in memory, focus, mood, or motivation…..or life just feels harder than it used to, an evaluation can provide valuable information to patients, their family members, and their healthcare team.
We take a comprehensive look at how your brain is functioning through clinical interviews, symptom questionnaires, and cognitive testing. Together, we evaluate key areas such as memory, attention, executive functioning, and emotional processing.
The goal is to give you real answers, deeper self-understanding, and a clear path forward.
What an Evaluation Can Do for You
Early symptom
detection
Identify if cognitive changes are normal age-related decline or if they are indicative of early neurodegenerative disease.
Assess brain injury or stroke effects
Understand the impact of traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, or concussion on your thinking, emotions, and functioning.
Clarify psychiatric vs. neurological issues
Distinguish whether symptoms like forgetfulness or low motivation are related to depression, personality disorders, trauma, anxiety, or even a medication side-effect.
Diagnose cognitive
decline
Interpret cognitive profiles to determine if it is consistent with neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, or other autoimmune/neurological conditions.
Support targeted treatment planning
Identify strengths and weaknesses in a person’s cognitive profile to inform learning strategies, therapeutic approaches, cognitive rehabilitation, and even medication management.
Guide school, work, or lifestyle accommodations
Recommend tailored supports that make daily life more manageable at work, at home, or in school. We believe that accomodations from the environment greater impact quality of life.

What to Expect From the Process
We know this kind of evaluation can feel like a big step. Here’s what the process looks like, so you know exactly what to expect:
We begin with a 15-minute call to determine if an evaluation is appropriate for your goals and concerns. This is the time to ask your questions and determine if Slate Psychology is the right fit for you!
1 | Complimentary Call
2 | Testing day
We schedule a full day of testing, which typically takes 5 to 7 hours. We’ll discuss your history, from childhood to the present day, and explore your current challenges in depth.
You’ll complete standardized paper-and-pencil tasks and symptom questionnaires that assess memory, language, attention, problem-solving, and emotional functioning. Think of it like a mental workout—we’re seeing how your brain performs across all different domains.
3 | Analysis and reporting
After testing, we spend about two weeks analyzing the data and writing a comprehensive, personalized report. This document includes diagnoses (if applicable), insights about your cognitive and emotional functioning, and clear, actionable treatment recommendations.
4 | Feedback session
We’ll meet for a 45-minute follow-up to go over your results together. We’ll explain what we found, how we arrived at those conclusions, and what the next recommended steps are. We promise you’ll walk away with a clear plan!
FAQs
-
Most evaluations take about 5-7 hours in person, depending on your needs and the complexity of your concerns.
-
Get a full night’s sleep, eat a balanced meal, and bring any glasses, hearing aids, or assistive devices you normally use. Discuss caffeine and prescription stimulant medication use prior to testing with your provider, as these substances can alter results.
-
Slate Psychology is an “out-of-network” provider. However, many plans offer partial or full reimbursement when evaluations are deemed medically necessary. You’ll receive a superbill with all relevant CPT codes and documentation to submit for reimbursement.
-
While some practices offer virtual evaluations, we feel strongly that data is most accurate when collected in person. In-person sessions allow for fewer distractions, facilitate better observation of nonverbal cues, and provide access to specialized testing materials essential for accurate diagnosis.
